The University Relations Division advances Wayne State University’s mission through strategic engagement with audiences and stakeholders with the university and beyond. The division unites the efforts of the previously separate Division of Government and Community Affairs, Office of Marketing and Communications, and the Board of Governors Office to foster a cohesive approach to advocacy, communication and collaboration.
The University Relations team works to strengthen Wayne State's connections with government entities, community organizations and the broader public while fostering a shared understanding of the university’s values and contributions. We are committed to amplifying Wayne State's impact by telling our story, developing innovative campaigns, promoting transformative initiatives, and advocating for policies that support higher education and community well-being. Through effective communication and collaboration, we build and maintain meaningful relationships that drive Wayne State’s prosperity and influence in Detroit, Michigan and beyond.
Leadership
Chief of Staff and University Relations Office
Dr. Smiley serves as the President’s Chief of Staff and heads WSU’s University Relations division, which includes governmental and community advocacy, marketing and communication, and the Board of Governors office. She also supports federal advocacy efforts.
Regional Relations Director
Stacie leads governmental advocacy activities for the City of Detroit and Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.
Senior Associate Vice President, Marketing and Communications
Doug leads the university's marketing and communications team and oversees the institution's branding efforts and strategic communications.
Community Affairs Vice President
Patrick leads WSU's community affairs activities, building and maintaining connections with community members and organizations on behalf of WSU.
University Secretary and Executive Officer to the Board of Governors
Julie provides administrative support to the Board of Governors.
