University Communications and Marketing

As an urban public research institution, Wayne State University plays a unique and influential role in Detroit, our region, our state and beyond. University Communications and Marketing (UCAM) leads the institution's branding efforts, protecting and strengthening the university’s reputation with key audiences. We work with campus partners, faculty, staff and students to tell Wayne State's story across channels — whether it’s traditional media coverage, our own digital and social platforms, or paid advertising — so the world can see and understand the impact Warriors make together. 

What we do

Guided by the university’s values and strategic plan, UCAM amplifies and shares Wayne State’s story in collaboration with partners across and beyond campus. We create awareness and understanding of the university’s impact through branding, digital experiences, integrated advertising campaigns, content creation, partnerships and media relations.  

Our areas of expertise include: 

Digital Experience and Innovation 

The Digital Experience and Innovation team supports and enhances Wayne State’s external presence, powering university websites, event calendar management, email templates and other web tools. We work to enhance the user experience for all external digital systems and oversee the university's digital accessibility. The team is composed of experts who assess and optimize digital experiences, and advance Wayne State’s use of external enterprise marketing technologies to reach the university’s audiences. 

Presidential Communications 

Presidential Communications supports the Office of the President and other university leaders with their communications strategy in channels that include speech writing, social media, presentations, website and multimedia content. 

University Communications 

The University Communications team shares the university’s story through content creation and work with media. We produce newsletters — including Today@Wayne, Get Involved, Campus Connection and EngageD — lead media trainings, serve as Wayne State’s primary contact for media inquiries, and manage crisis responses. In addition, we develop and pitch news stories, connect faculty experts with the media, monitor coverage and create media tip sheets to advance Wayne State’s mission. 

University Marketing 

The University Marketing team reaches our audiences through the creation of branded content, social media, paid media campaigns, marketing partnerships and more.  

  • Project Management leads Wayne State’s integrated marketing plan and coordinates content creation with UCAM and campus partners. 

  • The Creative Studio includes designers, writers and multimedia specialists who tell WSU’s story through visual and written materials.  

  • Social Media leads Wayne State's social media content creation and engagement strategy.  

  • Content Strategy optimizes WSU's content across channels, including web, campus newsletters and print media.  

  • Strategic Partnerships and Licensing oversee WSU’s brandmarks, partnering with the university’s licensing vendor to maximize the availability of WSU merchandise, ensuring quality, cost-efficient products for promotional needs.
